FORTY pages in size, plus a recruitment supplement – yesterday’s launch issue of the free evening edition of the Daily Record felt like a proper newspaper – at least the Edinburgh version did (Spike being based in the capital).
And in many respects, it was that morning’s Daily Record – but with a different emphasis in sport, to reflect the city’s SPL clubs, Hibernian and Hearts.
But without the paid-for’s columnists, such as Lucy Sweet.
While a reasonably dramatic photograph of novelist, Ian Rankin – standing in front of the Forth Rail Bridge – graced the cover of the Edinburgh Record PM (Spike having still to see the Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow PMs), the front page story was, however, not the exclusive it claimed to be – the Edinburgh Evening News having reported last week the establishment of ‘noise wardens’ in the capital.
As a marketing tool for this morning’s Daily Record – there was nothing overt at all, the decision clearly having been made that the editorial will speak for itself: if you like this, you might want to buy this.
