A MILESTONE in Scottish newspaper history was marked on Wednesday, when Malcolm Speed,
the managing editor of The Scottish Sun, celebrated 50 years in journalism – the occasion marked by an impromptu ceremony organised by colleagues, who suddenly appeared, bearing a cake.
It all began on January 3 1957, when Speed started as a junior reporter on the Cambeltown Courier.
What made Wednesday’s event all the more heart-warming is that, until towards the end of last year, Speed was managing editor of rivals, the Daily Record and Sunday Mail. But he has been made to feel very welcome by Sun staff.
Indeed, Speed was 41 years at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail, and felt that, even if his employers wanted him to retire, he wasn’t yet ready.
After the Cambeltown Courier, there were spells at the Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser and the Scottish Daily Mail.
The inscription on the cake read: “Congratulations, Malcolm Speed. 50 years in newspapers. January 3, 1957 – January 3, 2007. Best wishes from everyone at The Scottish Sun.”
