Partnership with BBC possible prize in search for ‘next big thing’

SCOTTISH companies looking to develop a new media idea, or a computer games proposal or even a bit of new media kit are invited to attend one of two workshops being hosted by the BBC – with a commercial partnership with the Corporation a possible prize.

In both Edinburgh and Glasgow, the BBC is running an Open Day introduction to its Innovation Lab, which “aims to uncover the latest innovations from Scottish companies and consortia which could become the ‘next big thing’ in broadcasting and new media.”

Involved in the open days – on the 7th and 8th of next month – is the Scottish Enterprise’s Digital Media and Creative Industries team.

The sequence of events is that, first up, there is an introduction to how to apply for one of six places on a week-long residential course to develop the proposals further. That is expected to take place early next year. And while there is no guarantee that any of the developed proposals will amount to a commercial proposition, there is the possibility that the BBC will offer a commercial tie-up.

The open days will be an opportunity to learn more about the BBC’s new media strategy and technological infrastructure.

In the last round of Innovation Labs, which is an UK-wide initiative, there were over 170 ideas generated, with 29 companies attending the week-long Labs, and 13 projects being selected for further development beyond the Labs.

The open day on the 7th is in Glasgow, the one on the 8th in Edinburgh.

Companies wishing to attend one of the two Open Days are required to register their attendance in advance by emailing innovationlab@scotent.co.uk or by visiting www.scottish-enterprise.com/digitalmedia.

Places are limited to one attendee per company or consortium, and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
