Four applications for Aberdeen radio licence

FOUR applications – all music-based – have been received to operate a new FM radio licence in Aberdeen.

Broadcasting regulators, Ofcom, have received bids from hopefuls calling themselves Aurora FM, Original 106 FM, Waves and Real Radio Aberdeen – the last of these pitched by the group that owns Real Radio Scotland, operating in Scotland’s Central Belt.

Aurora describes itself as “a full service station for the people of Aberdeen between the ages of 24 and 55, featuring local news and information mixed with mainstream adult contemporary, classic hits/soft rock music during the day and themed music and interactive features during the evenings and weekends”.

Original, meanwhile, is promoting itself as an ‘adult alternative radio’ station, with “an eclectic mix of adult-orientated music with particular ABC1 appeal, with 24 hour local news”.

Like its counterparts elsewhere, Real Radio Aberdeen sees itself as “an adult contemporary music and speech service for the Aberdeen area with 24 hour news, targeting primarily 25-54 year-olds”.

Waves’ description of itself is as “a music and information service for all adults in the Aberdeen area”.
