A FORMER Daily Record sportswriter, once one of the most familiar faces in the press boxes of either Tannadice or Dens Park football stadia in Dundee, has died.
Wallace Moore died on Saturday night, following a long illness which he bore stoically. He was 61.
Born in Paisley, he joined the Record staff as a 16 year-old copy boy and, during a lifetime of service to the paper, helped it become he biggest and best in Scotland.
When he was assigned to the sports desk, he moved to the Dundee office and covered the greatest achievements, both of Dundee and Dundee United with equal candour.
But the highlight for him would have undoubtedly been documenting the Tannadice club’s progress to the UEFA Cup final in 1987 and winning the Scottish League championship four years earlier.
Wallace was trusted and respected by a succession of managers and players on Tayside because he would never betray a confidence.
After retiring from the Daily Record seven years ago, he worked for a freelance agency in Dundee until three years ago when put away his notebook to pursue his passion for golf at Rosemount Golf Club, where he had a single-digit handicap.
He leaves a wife, Margaret, and two daughters, Lesley and Linda.
There is to be a private cremation on Friday. It will be followed by a service of thanksgiving in St Mary’s Episcopal Church, Queen Street, Broughty Ferry, at noon, to which all are invited.
