Social care charity hosts fun day at Ruchazie service to officially open outdoor sensory garden
QUARRIERS, one of Scotland’s leading social care charities, is celebrating the opening of its outdoor sensory learning space and the launch of the new Mud Kitchen at the Family Resource Centre in Ruchazie.
To mark the occasion, guests planted sunflowers and made wishes as they added ribbons to the ‘wishing tree’, whilst enjoying a BBQ and programme of Easter festivities.
They were also given an insight into the service and the support it provides to vulnerable children and families across the north east of Glasgow, helping them to achieve their full potential.
Over 150 children and families have access to the garden through the service. The outdoor sensory learning space aims to stimulate children’s development all year round.
The major upgrade to the garden was funded by SPIFOX, giving the outdoor space a much-needed revamp. A highlight is the specially-installed Mud Kitchen, designed to get kids closer to nature and supporting physical, emotional and cognitive development.
Children will use the combination of ‘ingredients’ they find in the garden and their imaginations to make ‘potions’ and ‘recipes’, as well as learning more about nature.
Speaking about the outdoor sensory learning space, Alice Harper, chief executive of Quarriers, said: “We are so grateful to SPIFOX for their generosity as without their support, our dream of achieving this wonderful outdoor space wouldn’t be possible.
“The garden as a whole is such a fantastic asset and we are particularly excited about the Mud Kitchen and the opportunities it holds. Children will learn vital social skills as they play together and will benefit in so many ways from being outdoors in the fresh air and being active.
“This safe, welcoming and relaxing outdoor sensory learning space will make a real difference to the lives of the children and families who access the service.”
Commenting at the grand opening, Tom Cromar, SPIFOX trustee, said: “We are pleased we could play a part in ensuring the creation of the garden for Quarriers Family Resource Centre in Ruchazie. It’s fantastic to see the children enjoying it already and we hope it brings joy to many.”
The Ruchazie Family Resource Centre provides holistic support with a focus on early intervention. The centre provides early years care for children aged 0-3 in the nursery, and provides short-term assistance and support to parents and carers, developing their parenting and coping skills required to give their children a strong foundation to grow.
